ABCRC Releases 2022 Sustainability Report

June 7, 2022

Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC), the organization responsible for the collection and recycling of more than 150,000 different types of regulated, non-refillable beverage containers across the province, is pleased to present its 2022 Sustainability Report titled “Leave no Trace.”

As a national leader in the beverage container recycling industry, ABCRC recycles, on average, over 2 billion containers each year. This eleventh sustainability report from the organization showcases this tremendous success and how ABCRC has continued to adopt policies and operations to drive sustainability initiatives.

“Being at the forefront of the beverage container recycling industry in Canada is incredibly exciting and speaks to the commitment from Albertans,” notes Guy West, President and CEO of ABCRC. “Ultimately, our goal is to responsibly steward recovered beverage containers, giving priority to circularity, to minimize their impact on the environment and to strengthen Alberta’s economy.”

In this reflective report, ABCRC highlights its commitment and progress to developing Alberta’s circular beverage container economy. A circular economy is one where waste can be recycled into limitless products, ensuring that products and materials are used as long as possible. For beverage containers, that means once they’re recycled, they are often turned back into beverage containers or other long-lasting products, such as house insulation or park benches.

“Compiling this report has really allowed us to look back on the incredible impact we’ve made this past year,” comments Lori Koebel, Director of Sustainability and Communications. “Our report showcases our ability to look beyond the take-make-waste business model to one that keeps products and materials in use for as long as possible; this not only limits our environmental footprint but helps build a new economy right here in the province.”

In addition to ABCRC’s commitment to environmental stewardship through responsible management of the circular economy for beverage containers, ABCRC is also committed to social engagement and fiscal stability through responsible governance. As highlighted in this new report, ABCRC has made a significant impact by employing hundreds of Albertans directly and indirectly and contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars towards community and school investments.

“Our report offers a holistic look at the positive impacts of the beverage container recycling industry in Alberta and demonstrates the value of ABCRC and the opportunity when Albertans work together to contribute to a sustainable future.”
