Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation Releases 30th Anniversary Sustainability Report

Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC) has released its latest Sustainability Report, Changing Perspectives, marking thirty years of beverage container recycling in Alberta.

As Alberta’s not‑for‑profit operator for regulated, non‑refillable beverage containers, ABCRC manages the collection and recycling of more than 150,000 container types and processes more than 2 billion containers each year.

The report highlights ABCRC’s long-standing role in helping to build a circular economy for beverage containers and outlines the organization’s progress in environmental stewardship, community impact and responsible governance. In the circular economy, beverage containers are not treated as waste; rather, recycled containers are transformed into new products—often new beverage containers, but also durable goods such as insulation and outdoor furniture—helping keep materials in use for as long as possible and out of landfills.

The report also highlights ABCRC’s broader contributions, including job creation across the province and financial support for recycling initiatives. Through responsible governance and long-term planning, the organization continues to prioritize environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

“Reaching this milestone has given us a chance to reflect on how far Alberta’s recycling system has come,” says Lori Koebel, Vice President of Sustainability & Stakeholder Relations. “Albertans are key to the system’s success – their participation contributes to a more sustainable environmental and economic for the province. It really shows what’s possible when we shift from a throwaway mindset to one that sees value in every material.”
