Drink pouches are multi-layer packaging that are extremely lightweight and easy to transport. While more complex to recycle than single-material containers, their multi-layer construction blocks out UV rays, moisture, and oxygen, extending product shelf life by up to 200% over other containers.
What are drink pouches?
Drink pouches are flexible, vacuum-sealed containers made from multiple layers of materials that make them puncture resistant. LDPE-nylon makes up about 50% of their construction, with the remainder being plastic, polycoat and metalised film.
Some might come with insertable straws for drinking, while others might have a resealable plastic screw cap for pouring.

- Pouches often have a built-in spill prevention feature – an expandable bottom (gusset) – that keeps them upright on counters or tables.
- Pouches are very durable – they can even be frozen and turned into a slushy treat for warm-weather outings.
- New recycling technologies are constantly improving material recovery rates.
The Drink Pouch Journey:
- Collected at depots and sorted by type.
- Baled at ABCRC.
- Resin is extracted by recycler where facilities exist.
- Resin used by manufacturers in pots and plastic planks. The remaining material is used as a fuel source.
