Gable top cartons are packaging made from multiple layers of paper fibers that keeps beverages fresh and safe. These containers are strong, but flexible and lightweight, and they protect the liquid inside from light and air.
What are gable top containers?
Gable top containers are polycoat cartons with a peaked, folded top. Some you pull open to pour, while others have a resealable plastic screw cap.
Layers of paper give the carton structural strength and a thin layer of polycoat makes the carton waterproof, since they’re usually refrigerated.

The Gable Top Journey:
- Collected at depots and sorted by type.
- Baled at ABCRC.
- Sent to recyclers for layer separation (hydropulping).
- Sent to manufacturers:
- Paper fibers are used to make paper products like tissue paper, paper towels and printer paper.
- The remaining aluminum-plastic mix is used as a fuel source or repurposed for composite building materials (where facilities exist).
