Bag-in-boxes are multi-layer packaging that keeps beverages fresh and safe. While more complex to recycle than single-material containers, these packages have a core advantage: vacuum-style dispensing keeps air away from the remaining liquid, preserving content freshness for long durations.
What are bag-in-box containers?
Bag-in-box containers are packaging systems – a flexible inner bladder inside a rigid cardboard box, with a plastic spout for pouring. Bladders are made of multiple layered materials, typically LDPE-nylon, plastic, polycoat and metalised films.
Bag-in-box containers are bulk by design, which limits packaging use, makes them easy to ship and store, and allows liquids to be dispensed quickly.

- The cardboard from a bag-in-box is recycled into old corrugated cardboard (OCC) , which can then be recycled another 5-7 times.
- These containers are lightweight, reducing transportation emissions.
- New recycling technologies are constantly improving material recovery rates.

- Collected at depots and sorted by type.
- Baled at ABCRC.
- Material separated at recyclers.
- Carboard converted into OCC.
- Bladders sent for resin extraction, to be used by manufacturers in pots and plastic planks. The remaining material is used as a fuel source.
