Multi-layer Cartons
Many Layers, Many Possibilities.
Multi-layer cartons come in many different sizes, but they all keep beverages fresh and safe. While more complex to recycle than single-material containers, these shelf-stable, lightweight packages play a vital role in reducing food waste and transportation emissions.
What are multi-layer containers?
Multi-layer containers are polycoat cartons folded into a brick-like shape. Some might come with insertable straws for drinking (small sizes), while others might have a resealable plastic screw cap for pouring.
They’re made from multiple layers of materials; paperboard for strength, plastic to stop leaks, and thin aluminum to block light and air.

This type of beverage container often holds:
- Juice
- Plant-based beverages
- Protein shakes
- Coffee and tea
- Wine

- The paper fibers in cartons can be recycled up to seven times.
- These containers are lightweight, reducing transportation emissions.
- New recycling technologies are constantly improving material recovery rates.
The Multi-layer Journey:
- Collected at depots and sorted by type.
- Baled at ABCRC.
- Where facilities exist, they are sent to a manufacturer to be repurposed whole for composite building materials.
- Where facilities do not exist for repurposing, they are sent to a recycling facility for layer separation (hydropulping) and then sent to manufacturers:
- Paper fibers are used to make recycled paper products like egg cartons, tissues and toilet paper.
- The remaining aluminum-plastic mix is used as a fuel source.
